In this week’s Sunday Times there was an article about micropubs. Micropubs and micro breweries are springing up all over the UK.

On the basis that micropubs and micro breweries are successful because they can cut through the rubbish and simply offer customers what they want – ie good beer at the right price in the right surroundings – we thought there had to be scope to provide a FREE web based directory of micropubs and micro breweries, and to provide cost effective web services for those that need help using the Internet to communicate with their customers or suppliers.

We found that the micropubs.co.uk domain name was available, registered it, set up DNS hosting for the domain, a cloud hosted mailbox for info@micropubs.co.uk, and a web site for www.micropubs.co.uk on our new web platform, using a standard design template. We then added content that was written “on the hoof” straight into the web pages, and a form so that people could enquiry or order various web packages. From beginning to end, this took about a day, albeit quite a long one!

We have since amended and fine tuned the content a bit, and will continue to do so, but the whole point is that from a standing start on Sunday morning, it was up and running within a day. It looks OK [if we were more serious, we’d have spent days on the design!], is self explanatory, everything works, and it is already being indexed by Google and other search engines as a result of the optimisation tools contained in our web site platform.

Other than the basic technical set up that we have to do for any client, we have done nothing that anyone with no technical knowledge whatsoever couldn’t have achieved themselves. Sure, we’ve done it quicker because we use this technology every day, but anyone can use cloud hosted email and web sites to login and manage their mailbox and web site content.

With a solid business idea, anything is possible on the Internet, and it doesn’t have to break the bank to achieve it. This might be an established business with a wealth of experience in the “real world”, who is looking at ways of using the internet to deliver their products or services better than they are currently doing, of which the ultimate aim is to be able to increase revenue and reduce overheads at the same time, or it might be a start up business who wants to establish a cost effective web site that really works and gives them the best possible opportunity of succeeding.

Th new toolbar cuts screen use to an incredibly compact 52 pixels. Plus, the new toolbar remains fixed to the top of your browser's viewport so no matter how far you scroll down, you'll always have instant access to its controls. The toolbar's sleek new design gives every your website a polished, professional look in editing mode.

We've also reorganized the toolbar options as well. A simple toggle control on the left edge allows you to switch between website options and store options without refreshing the page. This saves you a page load when moving between store and website controls. Account controls have been moved under the new user session menu (more on that menu below).

The New Page Bar has also changed. The previous toolbar had a third tier of controls that were related to page-level editing. Those controls have now been separated out to the all-new Page Bar. The Page Bar hovers over the top right of any page you're editing, but only when your mouse is over the page. The page bar displays the name of the current page's template and contains the fast template switcher, the "add a page" tool, the "preview page" button, and the "page settings" tool.

On the right edge of the toolbar, you'll see the new User Session Menu. It shows the name and image of the currently logged-in user. The image uses one's gravatar by default (if it exists) but users can upload their own images on their user profiles as well. The User Session Menu shows custom options based on the user who is logged in. All users will see a link to edit their profile in the User Session Menu. This means that non-admin users now have the ability to update their own profile information, a brand new capability with this update.
